Khartoum Sewerage Rehabilitation Project

Project Features
The existing sewerage system of Khartoum, the capital of the Republic of Sudan, was constructed in 1960 and had undergone several expansion works to cope with the growth of the city. However, the general deterioration of the facilities and inadequate maintenance led to frequent sewage overflows, in the process causing serious social problems in the area. The project’s objective was to restore the system to its original capacity and level of efficiency through the rehabilitation of the existing facilities.

Phase I of the project comprised the design and construction of a 31,400 cu. m/d sewage treatment plant including receiving tank and screens, rehabilitation of embankments of stabilization ponds, inter-pond connections, and influent and effluent pipes; a new sewage pumping station and replacement of mechanical and electrical facilities in 12 existing stations; 8 km long ductile iron pipe pressure main of 150 mm to 600 mm diameter; and rehabilitation and extension of 27 km of pressure main sewers.

Scope of Services
NJS conducted the basic design, topographical surveys, preliminary design and cost estimates, detailed design including hydraulic, civil, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation design, tender documents, and cost estimates, pre-construction activities including prequalification of contractors and tender evaluation, project planning and programming, contract management, construction supervision, and operations management.
